AI Lesson Plan Templates: A Prompt You Can Reuse

Most "AI lesson plan generator" tools are a form wrapped around a prompt you could write yourself. The template

Copy this into any AI chat tool (the free tier of any major one handles this fine) and fill in the four brackets:

Create a [LENGTH]-minute lesson plan for [GRADE] students on [TOPIC].

Structure it as:
1. Hook (2-3 minutes) — a question or short activity that connects to something
   students already know.
2. Direct instruction — the core content, broken into 2-3 chunks with a check
   for understanding after each one.
3. Guided practice — one activity students do with support.
4. Independent practice or exit ticket.

Assume a class of mixed-ability students. Flag anywhere the plan should be
adjusted for students who finish early or need more support, rather than
writing two separate versions.

What you'll typically get back: a hook involving a real weather event, direct instruction split into evaporation/condensation and precipitation/collection, a guided practice sketching the cycle, and an exit ticket. That's a genuinely usable first draft — the value isn't that it's perfect, it's that you're editing instead of starting from a blank page.

What to check before you use it

  • Timing is optimistic. AI-generated timing assumes no transitions, no attendance, no interruptions. Add 5-10 minutes of buffer for a real class period.
  • The hook is often generic. This is the piece most worth rewriting yourself — a hook that references something that actually happened in your class last week will beat anything generic every time.
  • Standards alignment needs a second look. The plan will claim alignment to the standard you named; verify the actual content matches, especially for math and science standards with specific rigor requirements (e.g., "explain" vs. "analyze" vs. "evaluate" are different cognitive demands).
  • Differentiation notes are a starting point, not a plan. If you have an IEP student with specific accommodations, the "flag adjustments" line above will suggest generic ideas (extended time, sentence starters) — cross-check against the actual accommodation, don't assume it's covered.
